Tour Tip

How understanding grain can improve your putting

On a fairly regular basis golfers of all skill levels are asking me questions about grain and how much certain putts can be influenced. Golfers sometimes blame missed putts on the grain when playing at Alpine, my home club, but that it simply not the case. Grain does not play much of a roll at all when putting on surfaces in this part of the country. However, for those of you getting ready to start your long winter season of golf in places like Florida and California, grain can play a major role in whether or not you are making putts and it is worth learning about.

Over the years there are a number of tips I have heard from both PGA Tour players and caddies when it comes to studying grain and knowing what to look for. For example, grain almost always breaks towards the west and the setting sun. European Tour players that I have coached sometimes even carry a compass in their golf bags when playing in places like South Africa where the grain can be severe, because of the importance of always knowing where west is. Grain also tends to break towards large bodies of water.

Other things to keep in mind when judging grain on a green is to walk up close to the hole and look to see how the grass is growing. You will usually be able to see the grass growing toward or away a certain part of the hole, which will show the direction the grain is going. When playing a practice round at Tour events I also see players dragging their putter along the green in different directions, and there will be one way the putter runs smoothly along the grass and in another it will grab quite a bit, allowing you to determine when you are putting into the grain or with the grain.

When you have an awareness for grain on a putting green it helps to determine how much or little a putt will break, or whether you should hit a putt firmer or softer. It is always interesting to me to see the same players playing well on certain golf courses throughout the Tour season. The Florida born players can't wait to get to the "Florida swing" because of the familiar surfaces, and then many of them will not putt nearly as well when the Tour moves on to another part of the country. Having the ability to adapt takes some practice but separates the best putters from the rest.

Please keep these simple thoughts in mind the next time you are working on your game.

Tour News

This coming fall and winter I will be traveling on Tour with Alex Rocha quite a bit, as he begins one final push for the Fall Finish in an effort to retain his PGA Tour card for the 2013 season. Alex is entering the fall ranked 147th on the PGA Tour money list and needs to move up just 22 spots to avoid a trip back to qualifying school.

Over the next several weeks and months I will be joining Alex to work with him at the McGladrey Classic in Sea Island, Georgia, the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic in Orlando, Florida, and the Argentine Open in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I will be posting live messages and information throughout these trips via twitter at www.twitter.com/Birnbaumgolf.

You can follow Alex throughout the remainder of the season at www.pgatour.com, or on my website at www.jb-golf.com.
