2009 Winter Newsletter

Winter is upon us, and although the thought of no golf for several months can be depressing, it can be a great time of the year to reflect on the state of your game and set realistic goals for the new year.  We all get a fresh start soon enough.  Please find below a golf instructional tip to improve your game, an update on where I will be offering instruction this winter, website updates, Tour news, and information on my junior golf manual that will be released in the coming weeks.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at any time.

Instruction Tip

Slow it down to own key swing positions....

The off-season can be a great time to evaluate your golf swing and pinpoint some of the key positions that need improving.  In order to get a better feel for the correct positions throughout the swing, practice by making swings in slow motion without hitting a ball.  This type of practice is the fastest way to feel the differences in your swing between right and wrong.  Swinging in slow motion gives you more control over the club, and allows you to put the club in certain preferred positions.  This type of practice is just as efficient when done indoors, and can be even more beneficial when practiced in front of a mirror (which is great for instant feedback in seeing the difference between "feel & real") or with a weighted club.  This slow motion practice should be done in stages, with a brief pause at each point to really incorporate the right moves.  These stages should consist of an athletic setup position, a halfway back position (left arm parallel to the ground for right-handed golfers), the top of the backswing, halfway down, impact, and follow-thru.  Remember, the best type of practice does not mean hitting balls at full speed for several hours at a time.  Sessions can be even more effective when done at the right pace.  Keep these simple thoughts in mind the next time you are thinking about improving your game.

Website Update

Please feel free to visit my website at www.jb-golf.com for the latest news and information throughout the winter months and heading into the 2010 golf season.  I have recently added a Twitter account to my homepage, allowing visitors to track what is happening on a daily basis.  Twitter has been one of the fastest growing ways to communicate and in short is a real-time short messaging service that works over multiple networks and devices.  I will be posting periodic messages for visitors throughout the season with information regarding my off-season trips, hot topics within the game, and what is happening in the world of professional golf.  Aside from viewing these posts online, they can also be sent to your cell phone as text messages at any time.  My "In the News" section is the best place to find the latest instructional programs that will be offered throughout the winter.

Tour News

This fall I began working full-time with an extremely talented professional golfer named Alexandre Rocha.  Alex is a fully exempt player on the PGA European Tour and is the highest ranked golfer in the world from Brazil.  A former All-American at Mississippi State University, Alex has recorded victories from around the world, including in Canada, South America, and in 2006 the European Tour's qualifying school.  Alex plays and practices out of the Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, FL.  I look forward to helping Alex achieve his professional goals and preparing him for the 2016 Olympic Games that will be held in Brazil and feature golf for the first time as an Olympic sport.  To follow Alex's progress in 2010 please visit www.pgaeuropeantour.com or www.jb-golf.com.

Junior Golf Manual

This winter I will be releasing a junior golf manual that will be filled with information pertaining to junior golf for both kids and parents.  A detailed junior golf manual is not currently in existence and in my opinion is very much needed for a variety of reasons.  As the game has continued to grow in multiple areas, it has become far too common for kids and parents to have difficulty finding the right track towards continued improvement.  This manual will be simple and easy to follow, and will include thoughts on areas such as the proper technique for juniors, playing high school or college golf, choosing the proper equipment, fitness for juniors, as well as a wide array of other important areas.  The manual will be complete during the month of December and will be available as a PDF file online through my website.  I have teamed with a well respected New Jersey-based golf writer named Tom Mackin to assist me with this project.  Tom has worked as an associate editor for Golf Magazine and as a frequent contributor on golf and travel to many national and international publications.  He has written for Travel + Leisure Golf, Links Magazine, Nicklaus Magazine, Golf World, and The Met Golfer, among others.  More information to follow.
